Elizabethan society was strongly hierarchical, everyone had a place in the social order.

The majority of the people still lived int he country, and made a living by farming, growing enough food for their own use and selling off the surplus. Most people were at least partly self-sufficient. As well as growing their own food, the farmers wives would make their own butter and cheese, brew their own ale, distill their own perfume, make their own soap and candles etc. Preserving food for winter would be an important household task, as there was little fresh food available in winter.

Towns were a lot smaller than they are now, but full of tradesmen and craftsmen and merchants of all kinds. Most tradesmen would belong to a guild, which looked after the interests of its members. Most businesses were family affair's, with wives and children being involved as well. Shakespeare grew up in Stratford-on-Avon, and would probably have been accustomed to helping out in his father's business.

Shakespeare probably attended the grammar school in Stratford, there are lots of references to schoolin gin his plays which suggest that he was familiar with the grammar school routine. The school day was very long and discipline was severe, boys were beaten for not knowing their lessons, which mostly consisted of learning Latin and Greek grammar. It must have been incredibly tedious.

As a country boy, Shakespeare would have played in the woods around Stratford, fished and probably hunted for rabbits and small games, his plays are full of images of country life and country lore.

Everybody would be expected to go to church on Sunday, whether they lvied in town or country. The Church of England had become the established church of Shakespeare's day, but he would have known many people who had grown up in the days when England was still Catholic, many people still adhered to the Catholic faith at the time of the accession of Queen Elizabeth.

Sports like Wrestling, running and jumping were popular, as were games like skittles and bowling. People also enjoyed more bloodthirsty entertainments like bear-baiting and rooster-fighting.

Most people enjoyed music and dancing. Grand households employed their own personal musicians to entertain the company. Many people would be able to play a musical instrument.

Printing had made books very popular, and although they were more expensive than books today, there were a great many published on all sorts of subjects, and broadsheets, which commented on issues of the day were very popular.

The theatre developed rapidly during the later part of the 16th century, and the first permanent theatres were built in London and became an important part of London life. Most theatres showed two or three different plays in a week, so there was a lot of variety. Shakespeare was a prolific writer, and his plays would have been shown frequently. It is known that Queen Elizabeth enjoyed seeing plays performed, and it is said that after seeing Henry IV, she said she would like to see Falstaff in love, which led to Shakespeare writing The Merry Wives of Windsor.

Shakespeare's plays must have been admired in his own day, otherwise nobody would have bothered to put together the First Folio after his death, but it was not until about two hundred years later that he really came to be regarded as our great

this is just what i think but i think that sinceLondon wasn't to nice back then and people where dying at the age of forty that William Shakespeare's poetry plays cheered everyone up he made them laugh in bad time he gave them stories to think about and most importantly he helped everyone up when they were down!!!

Politicians did not spend any time trying to be popular with the people at large. Instead, they spent their time trying to be popular with the monarch, who was the most powerful person in the country, and with those close to the monarch.

Apart from areas which did not have any kind of central government, such as America north of Mexico and much of Africa, the most common form of government at the time was a monarchy, where the bulk of the decision-making power was in the hands of one person. Some countries, especially China, had a highly developed civil service which performed the administrative functions of government, which also meant that it did a lot of the ruling.

Of course. In Shakespeare's country, England, it consisted of the monarch, Queen Elizabeth I, her Privy Council and the Houses of Parliament. In other words it was similar to the situation in Britain nowadays except that the Queen had a lot of power in her own right, including the right to choose the members of her Council, and that the House of Commons was not elected by any process which we would recognize as democratic. The House of Commons was not the source of political power as it is now, although Parliament did have certain jealously guarded rights. Queen Elizabeth used her charm to get Parliament to support her policies but her cousin's grandson lost his head for trying to encroach on those rights less than thirty years after Shakespeare's death.

England in Shakespeare's day was a monarchy. The Queen or King ruled the country, subject only to the restraints set by Magna Carta and other similar constitutional documents. The real power was in the hands of the monarch.

The government could be intrusive in the lives of its citizens. People who held unorthodox religious views were liable to be imprisoned, tortured and put to death. Concern for the stability of the state also caused the government to strictly censor publications and plays for content which be politically subversive; this was an aspect of government which affected Shakespeare's life considerably.
