Likely the Cuban missile crisis.

In short: Following the "bay of pigs operation" the Cubans were not happy with the U.S and very red and was going to be supplied with nukes from the soviets, this would put the U.S in a bad spot so to no ones surpries they did not like it.

When the ships that we're going to deliver the nukes departed, the U.S threatened with war and nukes if those boats passed a certain line in the ocean.
