Of the many great hits, Rod Stewart is best-known for singing Maggie May, the 1971 song which was almost dropped from the album and surfaced as the B-side to Reason To Believe. After it was played by mistake, it helped launch Rod Stewart into the spotlight where he went on to make over 50 albums.

The first major UK hit was Reason To Believe which had Maggie May on the B-side.

By the time it charted, it was being printed as a double-A-side, since Maggie May was played by mistake by a DJ in Cleveland Ohio and the single gained a new lease of life.

It reached number one in UK and USA at the same time in autumn of 1971 and so did the album that it came from, Every Picture Tells A Story.

YES... Maggie May was the original B-side of Reason To Believe before becoming a Double-A side record after a Cleveland DJ played the other side on a radio station. This single, AND THE ALBUM that it came from (Every Picture Tells A Story) were Number One in USA and in UK at the same time between late September and early November 1971, something even The Beatles or Elvis Presley never achieved.

Depends what day you asked the question, but the most likely answer is the single Reason To Believe, which was the original A-side before Maggie May (the B-side ) took over as favoured airplay by radio DJ's. The record's status was changed to Double-A-side and went to number one in UK and USA at the same time, as did the album that it came from, Every Picture Tells A Story. This was September/October 1971 finally being knocked off top spot by Cher on 5th November.
