Home Guard is a term used by British and Canada that describes the soldiers who were assigned to local protective duty such as guarding factories, POW Camps, manning coastal artillery or spotting for enemy aircraft.

These units used volunteers who were over the age to serve in the army but I don't know if they were considered part of the Home Guard or an auxillary unit.

Added; It is also the trademarked name for a monitoring and tracking system used to keep track of persons released on bail. parole, or probation.

The Homeguard were volunteers who defended the five thousand miles of British coastline in the event of an invasion by Germany. They were originally called the Local Defence Volunteers.

The home guard were volenteers who couldn't go into war because they were too old; too young; injured or other reasons. They would fight /defend/ or doany jobs that the people gone to war would normally do. They would use tools such as rakes and kitchen knives todefend their country if Germany were to attack.
