It meant that Britain and France had to give up their plans to help the Confederates. The war had now been turned into an official crusade against slavery, and those two free nations could not be seen to fight for slavery.

While it did not result the automatic freedom of all slaves residing in the Confederacy, one immediate result was the freedom of runaway slaves that were being held by the Union Army. The Emancipation Proclamation, in essence, made the Confiscation Acts null and void, allowing these runaways to be let free. Other effects came from the result on Army numbers. While some units suffered from desertions, a result of people disagreeing with the policy, it was also predicted that the Proclamation would eventually increase Union Army members and help win the war for the north.

Britain having to abandon its plans to send military aid to the Confederates. Having abolished slavery thirty years earlier, they could not be seen to fight for slavery. (The situation with the French was also similar.)

Lincoln was also hoping to restore Northern civilian morale by turning the war into an inspiring crusade against slavery, but the forthcoming mid-term elections did not reflect this.

As far as the Southern slaves were concerned, it just meant that the Union armies were allowed to liberate them (upon which they would be homeless) and that if the North were to win the war, they would automatically be freed (and also homeless).
