The wealthy land owners were not about to see a drop in their profit, so the prices on the remaining potatoes was about doubled so that the aristocratic class could stay comfortable. Charles Trevelyan, an Englishman, tried to help starving Irish families by opening up workhouses where they could at least get a meal. However, these workhouses were breeding grounds for diseases and made matters worse.

Some people resorted to cannibalism. The Irish had been so dependent on potatoes that they didn't know how to fish or obtain food in other ways. Many Irish emigrated to America where they took scrub jobs. Many people in America were Protestant, and the Irish, being Catholic, were looked down upon. Some Irish were inducted into the Union Army.

the impact was great, although it really should not have mattered ! because there was more than enough of other food crops been grown in Ireland at that time by the British. but the food they wee growing was being shipped out to country's in their commonwealth. there was in fact no famine in Ireland . it was purely genocide !!!... of course its all unwritten history now a days. just like the rest of the unwritten grievances they caused us back then ...
