Wow, that's and interesting questioning. Bull Run was the first battle of the Civil War occurring less then 60 miles from the nation's capitol. Families from as far away as Washington, DC came out into the country that day to picnic and watch the Union Army put a stop to the southern foolishness once and for all. But a surprise awaited them. The Confederates surprised everyone with their force and conviction to their cause. The Union Army retreated and spectators were horrified at sight of such carnage. Several things were learned that day. First, neither army was going to back down. They were each committed to their cause. Second, things were not going to be easy for the Union because they were fighting in unfamiliar territory since most battles took place in the south. The Confederates were fighting for their homes and their way of life so they had extremely strong convictions. The last war fought on American soil had been in 1812, some 50 years before. Very few people knew what war was really like. And worst of all - they were fighting against their own countrymen not some unknown ruler across the Atlantic. Sometimes fathers were fighting against sons, and brothers against brothers. How does that battle affect America today? First, I think we learn from our mistakes. That's why it's so very important to know our history. Did that war really have to be fought to bring America together? If people had just listened to one another and really looked for solutions instead of blaming each other I'm sure compromises could have been found. The South figured out how to live without slaves, although slavery wasn't the major issue. Freeing the slaves could have happened without a war. (Did you know that less than 350,000 people owned slaves before the Civil War and only 1000 of those owned 20 slaves or more? Think about that: 1860 Population: Total Free Population: 27,489,561. Total Slave Population: 3,953,760. Grand Total 31,443,321) Look how the nation came together immediately following 9/11. If we could have that kind of camaraderie all the time we would never have to have another Bull Run. Is there a division happening again over the issue of boarder control and national security? There doesn't need to be. We have laws governing Immigration. Why not just enforce those laws? The problem back then was economic - The factories in the north were overpricing the goods they were selling to the south made with materials, like cotton, grown in the south and shipped north for processing. The problem now is economic - people from poorer countries are willing and eager to come here to work for minimum wage, because too many Americans won't work those jobs requiring little skill for little money. Take the high school kids I've asked to come help me with yard work. They want $10 or $15 per hour and most of that hour they're sitting around talking on cells phones that their parents are paying for. The skill required for the job is minimal. It requires very little brain work; mostly muscle use. How is that worth more then $6 or $7 an hour? And honesty and integrity says work the whole hour for which you expect to get paid. Immigrants are willing to do that. But such issues could cause a rift in our society. How does the Battle of Bull Run affect America today? Have we learned to listen to each and find solutions in which both sides get some of what they need? I hope so. If you like my answer, I hope you will remember to put it into your own words and not plagiarize. We high school social studies teachers really hate that! J
