The South Vietnam ancient imperial city of Hue, a university town of over 100,000 people during the war, was the boyhood home of Ho Chi Minh, Premier of North Vietnam.

The city of Hue was occupied by North Vietnamese forces and most of the leaders, professors and other professionals of the city were assassinated. North Vietnam held the city for about three weeks during the TET holiday offensive of 1968.
