The inspiration to send people to space was a part of the cold war dominance for space.

Russia showing that they could launch Spudnik demonstrated their abilities to deliver nuclear war heads anywhere on Earth.

Hence, the race for space began .. whichever superpower could control space would dominate in global thermonuclear war.

Thus, America put people on the Moon after designing a worthy space program.

As the Russian-American Cold War ended, so did the need to innovate and compete for space.

That said there is renewed interest in privatized & commercial use of space. Entrepenuers like Elon Musk and Richard Bronson are vying to begin space flight tourism as a way to gain a foot hold on the benefits of space for companies and individuals alike.
