It used to be called the land of Cannan.

Then it became the Kingdom of David.

Then it was split into the northern kingdom, Israel, and the southern kingdom, Judea.

Then it was conquered by Babylon.

Judea was re-established after the Babylonian exile, and the northern kingdom was known as Samaria and also as Galilee.

Rome kept these names when it conquered the land.

After the second Jewish revolt, Rome expelled the Jews and named the land Phillistia

The name Phillistia became Palestine, a name that remained under Byzantine, Ottoman and English Rule.
