Both North and South Vietnam suffered from lasting impact of the Vietnam War. Many highly explosive bombs dropped by America failed to explode and hence continued to have an effect on people and surroundings. Moreover the anti-personnel mines dropped during the war remained and were activated when people trod on them resulting in inflicting injuries. The Agent Orange sprayed destroyed large hectares of land and forest.
Dictionary: "Legacy"-a gift property...etc, anything handed down from the past... "What is the military legacy of the Vietnam war?" Response: 1. Airmobile Divisions (Helicopter Warfare) 2. Riverine Boat Warfare: All aluminum PCF-Patrol Craft Fast (Swift Boats); All steel ASPB-Assault Support Patrol Boats (Alpha Boats); All fiberglass PBR's-Patrol Boat River; All steel river battleships (Monitors). 3. SEAL's (Sea Air & Land); SF (Special Forces, aka Green Berets); USAF Commando Units. 4. For the first time in US history, a permanently established US Military Sniper School (Program). 5. Aerial Gunships, still retained by the services; AH-1 Cobra helicopter (replaced by the AH-64 Apache); and the AC-130 Spectre Gunships, fixed wing. To name a few.
Airmobile Divisions, SEALS, Special Forces (Green Berets), permanent established US military sniper schools (formally secret stuff), helicopters, fighter/bombers and assault rifles; and the Vietnam War is specifically responsible for putting GUNS back onto all US fighters including today's 21st century aircraft/also responsible for setting up the "Dog-Fighting" schools at Top Gun & RED FLAG. Note: Prior to the Vietnam War US jet fighters (with the exception of the F105 Thunderchief) were designed for one purpose: shooting down Soviet bombers/and their escorts. In Vietnam ALL US fighters were turned into FIGHTER/BOMBERS including, believe it or not, the F102 Delta Dagger and the F104 Starfighter.
Thanks to the Vietnam war, America's latest computerized hi-tech jet fighter the F22 Raptor still has guns on it.
Note: Prior to the Viet War the whole world was going to missiles (along with computers, transister radios, color television, cordless phones, automatic transmission cars, etc.). Then came the air war over the skies of North Vietnam...and the NVAF MiGs were shooting down US jets left and right with GUNS! (Cannons to be exact). So, the US began puting 20mm cannons back onto their jets (like the F4s)...and to this day (almost a half a century later) the US still remembers that bitter lesson...and STILL PUTS GUNS on jets!
The greatest legacy for the US is an all volunteer armed service. It may have its problems, but there are some fine young people serving today.
Politics will never change; as long as people are people.
