Otto Lilienthal (1848-1896) was one of the first men to fly. He designed, built, and flew many different designs of gliders. His gliders were designed to be controlled by shifting his weight, just like modern hang gliders.
He died flying one of his powered gliders. The Wright brothers were inspired by his bi-plane designs.
In Germany
yes otto made the first hang glider in our history and he died in 18 someting during a glider accadent :( RIP otto lilienthal <3
I am glad you stated Biplane, this would have been Herr Lilienthal.
The German glider expert was Otto Lilienthal
Otto Lilienthal created the hang glider to explore the principles of flight and to achieve human-powered flight. He was inspired by observing birds and sought to understand aerodynamics through practical experimentation. His designs were pivotal in the development of aviation, as he conducted numerous successful flights, demonstrating the feasibility of controlled gliding and contributing to the foundation of modern aeronautics.

They were intrigued by the German aviator Otto Lilienthal and his gliders. The Wright brothers began to design their glider in earnest after Lilienthal died in a glider accident.

German engineer Otto Von Lilienthal in 1891
Otto Lilienthal's first glider, built in 1891, was primarily constructed from a wooden frame covered with a fabric made of cotton. The wings were designed with a curved shape to facilitate lift, and the glider featured a simple structure to test his theories on flight. Lilienthal's pioneering work laid the foundation for future developments in aviation.
