The chief concern of General Sherman's march to Savannah, or in fact to any point on the Atlantic coast that he might be able to march north and reinforce Union troops battling the Confederates in Virginia. Such a combined Union force there would enable the Federals to break through the Confederate entrenchments surrounding Petersburg.
General Sherman wrote about his reasons of concern for his friend US Grant at the Siege of Vicksburg. Sherman believed that Grant was working and hampered by Northern public opinion. So much so that Sherman feared Grant would abandon the effort to capture Vicksburg.

Major General William T. Sherman was a wise and capable commander and he was now facing the Confederates deep in their own territory. And, his three armies did not have what can be called overwhelming numerical superiority. He faced Confederate Joe Johnston's Army of Tennessee. Sherman commanded 100,000 troops to Johnston's 60,000. This may seem to be a clear advantage for the Union, and just by the numbers it was a 10 to six advantage. However, with that said, Sherman had to take the offensive to reach Atlanta, and Johnston's forces, if entrenched would be a difficulty. Also, with Johnston's numbers, Sherman had to be aware of any counter attacks that would slow his forces down. Also, there were no handy reinforcements available, at least not any forces that could quickly come to his aid. With that said, in Sherman's own words, he saw the territory before him as " one huge fort connected by 50 miles of trenches. Defensive entrenchments had to this point in the war to be excellent sources of strength. This indeed was what his superior officer, US Grant was also facing in Virginia.
I believe that Burnside's main concern with moving his army directly south towards Richmond was the distinct possibility of a flank attack from Confederate General Stonewall Jackson, whose Corps occupied the Shenandoah Valley. The nearby presence of Robert E. Lee's army added to this concern.General Burnside, among others was concerned that using the large amount of troops against Richmond posed a major problem. The concern was that not enough Union forces would be available to protect Washington DC, in case the Confederates launched an attack on the US capital.

Apathetic
Union Major General William T. Sherman had played a key role in the US Civil War. After the war ended he wrote extensively about the importance of logistics. He provided statistics on the value of moving supplies and soldiers by railways in comparison to using roadways. His conclusions favored the use of railways over using roads. One concern, however, regarding railroads was the danger that Confederate cavalry presented. Rebel cavalry units often hampered Sherman's supply lines by destroying bridges and rails that trains required for his campaigns in the Western Theater.
