Catholic Answer

It's just Catholic, not Roman Catholic. Roman is an epithet first commonly used in England after the protestant revolt to describe the Catholic Church. It is never used by the official Catholic Church.

The goal of Catholic missionaries is to fulfill God's Will; to bring God's Word to people, and to bring those people to God. To further the mission of the Church in saving people from their sins. Missionaries "role" is to fulfill the command of Our Blessed Lord to preach the Gospel to all nations and baptize them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Catholic missionary work was the same in the past as it is today. We are to go out to all the world, proclaiming the Gospel, and baptizing everyone in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. This was Our Blessed Lord's last command to us, and if we do not fulfill, we cannot entertain a serious hope of heaven when we die. Everyone who is lost because we have not shared the Good News with them, is one more that we will have to explain the day of our death. And if their damnation is because of our failure, then we really cannot entertain any hope of heaven. Every single Catholic is called to do missionary work by their baptism. We must start with our fellow Catholics, who have, for the most part, lost the faith. So we must start by educating ourselves in the faith.
