The Middle Ages marked a shift from Classical Architecture to Basilica Architecture as much of the architecture done during this period were cathedrals. By the 10th century, architecture had once again returned to the classical form and Romanesque Architecture became popular. The late Middle Ages saw the rise of Gothic Architecture that endured for most of the period.

The Romanesque Architecture which started in the 7th century, characterised by semi-circular arches, was succeeded in the 12th century by Gothic Architecture which was characterised by the combining of pointed arches, ribbed vaults and flying buttresses. Gothic Architecture in the middle ages was inspired by the spiritual beliefs of the people so the buildings were built reaching for the skies.
