Voters were concerned about the rise of communism, which was popular in China and Eastern Europe at the time, the growing power of the federal government, bribery and corruption in politics, the Korean War led to some inflation, strikes, and labor unrest, and most of all, a Korean armistice (truce) had been going on for more than a year. The voters wanted a change after 10 years of a Democratic leader.
