Spain was not participant in WW2, remaining neutral, although Hitler tacitly supported the Fascist Dictatorship of General Franco and lent him dive-bombers during the Spanish Civil War to attack Republican forces. This included the notorious attack on the village of Guernica, which was later painted in semi-abstract style by Picasso and is displayed in the foyer of the UN headquarters in New York.

The main conflict in Spain was the Spanish Civil War, which lasted from 1936-39 and was a similar situation to that which occurred in Chile in the early '70s- a Left wing Government was elected and the Fascist military, led by Franco, moved to overthrow it. Neighbouring European nations failed to intervene against the Fascists for fear of provoking war with Hitler and / or Mussolini, who may well have moved to support their brother dictator, although many men and women joined the International Brigade (a loose multinational alliance of Socialist paramilitaries) to go and fight against Franco's forces. These included many young men from Wales, and also the author George Orwell.

Franco was allowed to remain in power until he died in 1972- quite why is unclear, but Spain should have been subject to international sanctions and excluded from the UN until he fell from office, as was done in the case of apartheid South Africa.
