The men's council in the Iroquois Confederacy was known as the Grand Council or the Council of Chiefs. It was composed of leaders from the various member tribes of the Confederacy. The main role of the council was to make decisions regarding governance, diplomacy, and military matters.

To keep the peace the Iroquois Confederacy developed the Great Law. It was more than a set of rules it was also a set of guidelines. They also set up a Grand Council that made decisions through discussion and compromise.
Historically, the Iroquois had tribal elders to teach young men about stories of their culture. Young men would have mentors that showed them how to make weapons or hunt. Women were mostly taught by their mothers.
The Iroquois Confederacy is still alive and well. The Six Nations (Seneca, Cayuga, Tuscarora, Onondaga, Oneida and Mohawk) continue to meet in Grand Council, as a confederacy, in the Onondaga reserve in NY and the Six Nations reserve in Canada.
