There were many ways Europe controlled African territories. There were:

  • Dominions. They were able to partially control their internal and external affairs, but were still subject to partial European control.
  • Self-Governing colonies. Nearly totally self-governing, with Europe still controlling much of their external affairs.
  • Colonies with Representative councils. They had legislative chambers, but didn't totally control their internal or external affairs.
  • Colonies ruled directly by a governor. They had little/no autonomy over themselves. Governors controlled almost all affairs.
  • Protectorates. A self-governing territory that is ruled externally by a European power to protect them from stronger/larger nations. In return for the protection, the protectorate has things such as good trade ties with the controller.
  • Mandates. Territories acquired from Germany by other European nations following WWI. Depending on the territory, they had varying degrees of autonomy.
  • Dependent territories. The territory has much internal and external sovereignty, but is still controlled by a European power
  • Company rule. A company controls and has nearly complete control over a territory. The territory isn't controlled by a government.
