We would only call it a "failing" if we judge them by today's standards where a Pope is a humble priest living a sober and simple life and only caring for the spiritual needs of his flock and fighting social injustice. Like Pope Francis does today.
In the Renaissance however things were totally different. The Pope was generally - and also by himself - considered a ruling Prince among other ruling Princes. Better still: he was a ruling Prince who actively exerted moral superiority over his fellow Princes. So everyone found it completely natural that he should live like a Prince, holding a splendid Court like one, having his own army and fleet, giving sumptuous parties and banquets and even having a mistress like all other self-respecting rulers of the time (you have to remember that the active enforcement of priestly celibacy is a thing of the 19th century, 300 years later).
So the politically correct answer is to say that they overindulged themselves, lived in too much luxury and were too un-priestly by far, even conducting fights with their neighbors. But in the eyes of almost all the people living at the time they were splendid rulers, "king of the Christian world" in many ways who very rightly lived as such.
