This was prior to the civil war ( 11 years later the civil war will start) so much of what happened was about slavery. In 1846 Dred Scott sued for his freedom in a Missouri Court and in 1852 the Missouri Supreme Court ruled against him. On March 1857 Chief Justice Taney of the United States Supreme Court against Scott. He wrote that slaves were property. In 1853 the Kansas Nebraska Act was passed and in 1855 Bleeding Kansas happened when the vote came to decide if Kansas would come in as slave or free state. On May 21, 1855 John Brown and his sons attack a settlement near Pottawatomie Creek and murdered 5 people. This won't be the last time John Brown is heard from. So, as you can see it wasn't one event but many in the 1850's that were important. Each of these will help lead the country towards civil war.
