A cargo ship is any vessel which is primarily used to carry cargo, goods or raw materials from port to port. There are an enormous variety of cargo ships in all shapes and sizes. They can be divided into the following categories. General cargo vessels, tankers, container ships, dry bulk carriers, mutlipurpose ships and reefers (for frozen cargo).
A ship is an oceangoing craft ( boats are for lakes and rivers ). The two main types are power and sail. Powered ships include tankers, freighters, cruise ships, whalers, etc. Sailing ships are a bit more complex, they can be classified by what they do, similar to the powered vessels, but also by the number and location of the masts and sails. The difference between ketches, yawls, schooners, sloops, and such, fall into this category. Some ships just refer to a style of use ( fishing, yachts, etc. ) and can be either type.

Cruise ships have two types of stabilizers, both of which are found on most modern day liners. The wing-type is an underwater wing that automatically pitches up and down to keep the ship stable. The gyroscopic-type is a whirling weight inside the ship that keeps the ship upright.
