The encomienda system was originally created by the Spanish. It was put in place so that they were able to regulate and control the American Indian behavior and labor during the colonization of Americas.
Indentured labourers began arriving in Trinidad in 1845, following the abolition of slavery in 1834. The British colonial government sought to address labor shortages on plantations, leading to the importation of workers primarily from India, as well as from other regions. This system continued until 1917, bringing a significant number of indentured workers to the island. Their arrival profoundly influenced Trinidad's cultural and demographic landscape.
The caste system in India was influenced by factors such as religion, social hierarchy, and economic structure. It was also shaped by the need for social organization and division of labor in ancient Indian society.
The system used by the Spanish crown to grant land and labor to Spanish settlers in the Americas was known as the encomienda system. Under this system, Spanish settlers were given land and granted control over the indigenous population living on that land, in exchange for their loyalty and the obligation to protect and Christianize the native inhabitants.
The northern Free Labor system relied on paid labor and hired workers who were not enslaved. In contrast, the southern plantation slave labor system relied on enslaved individuals who were forced to work without compensation. The Free Labor system provided more economic mobility and autonomy for workers compared to the oppressive conditions of the plantation system.

A coercive labor system means a forced labor system as in slavery or an indentured laborer (a slave guaranteed freedom after service).
Spanish settlers primarily employed indigenous people as slaves across North and South America. The mission system throughout Baja California and the American Southwest was predicated on Indian labor. One could debate the issues of religious conversion versus enslavement, but the system was based on Indian labor. African slaves were primarily used in the British and former British colonies along the eastern seabord.
