The Roman trade routes were too numerous to provide an extensive list. They extended all over the vast Roman Empire. TheMediterraneanwas a major trade route as all the lands on its shores belonged to the empire. Egypt exported half of the grain produced in the empire and other majorproducerswere Tunisia,Sicilyand Sardinia. Egypt also exported cotton, linen papyrus, ivory, gemstones, ebony, ostrich feathers, leopard skins, lions, leopards and elephants. Spain exported silver and other metals, andoliveoil, timber and horses. Turkey and Syria exported timber, wool, olive oil wine and horses. Greece exported manufactures.

The Atlantic was a route for trade witheasternSpain,Portugal, easternFrance, Britain, Belgium and southern Holland. A land trade route from these areas crossedFranceand reached theMediterraneanvia the valley of the river Rhone. Britain exported metals and wool, France exported glass, wine and wool. The Alps were a trade route betweenItalyandSwitzerlandand southernGermanyandAustria. The rivers Rhine andDanubewere used as trade routes.

Jordan acted as atraderoute for incense, perfumes and spices from Arabia and the Red Sea to Syria. The ports in Syria andPalestineandTurkeyshipped goods which came from China via the Silk Road and from India and the goods which arrived form Arabia via Jordan. There was also trade around the Black Sea. Major ports were Tarragona in Spain, Narbonne and Marseille in France, Genoa and Rome in Italy, Carthage in Tunisia, Alexandria in Egypt, Caesarea in Palestine, Antioch in Syria, Ephesus, Smyrna and Pergamon in Turkey and Athens in Greece.

The Romans also had extensive trade with India via the mentioned overland routed, bay also maritime. Indian goods reached Egypt via the Indian ocean and the red Sea and were then transported to the Mediterranean coast of Egypt. Spices, herbs, sesame oil, sugar, limes, peaches, ebony, pearls and wild animals (tigers, rhinos, elephants, and snakes which were used for circus-type animal acts) were imported from India.
