Perhaps you mean petroglyphs or pictographs (petroglyphs are signs carved into stone, pictographs are generally painted on other types of surface).

These were not a true writing system since they did not represent language, nor can they be used to spell out words or names. Instead they were a simple way of remembering people, places or events in a pictorial way - so they are more pictures than writing.

An example is the signs used in Lakota "winter counts", which help to recall specific events during each successive year. An attack on a camp, for example, might use the image of a tipi with arrows stuck into it; the death of a Lakota man called Red Coat was recorded by portraying a man in a red coat with two arrows protruding from his chest; the theft of 30 spotted horses was recorded with the picture of just one horse with a spotted coat.

None of this records language, simply acting as a memory aid.
