The French failed line of defense during World War II was the Maginot Line. This series of fortifications was built along the French-German border to deter an invasion, but the Germans circumvented it by attacking through the Ardennes Forest, which was lightly defended. This led to the rapid defeat of France in 1940.
The Allied invasion of German occupied France begain on what is commonly now termed as "D-Day", 6 June 1944 (Operation Overlord). A second Allied invasion of Southern France began on 15 August 1944 (Operation Dragoon). On 28 August 1944 the German army surrendered to Allied forces in Toulon and Marseilles, marking the beginning of the end of the successful French invasion.

In 1940 Britain was deficient in military defense if a German army was able to land an invasion force on British soil. Britain's defense depended on the Royal Navy to control the English Channel. The Royal Navy did control the channel because it had convenient bases and a large number of cruisers that were well armed and could sink any German transport ships. The German navy was far too weak to combat Britain's navy in the channel.
1939. Actually, German armies have invaded Poland several times over the centuries, but you are probably thinking of the 1939 invasion at the beginning of WWII.
This is different for all countries involved. Some significant events that could be called the beginning: Japanese invasion of China, 1931 Italian invasion of Ethiopia, 1936 Franco's coup d'etat in Spain, with aid from Germany and Italy, 1936 German invasion of Poland, and subsequent declaration of war by UK and France, 1939 German invasion of western Europe, 1940 German invasion of USSR, 1941 Japanese assault on USA, 1941
The line of bunkers designed to fend off German invasions was called "la ligne Maginot" (the Maginot line; it is named after the Defense minister who had it built).
The Department of Defense lists French as one of the easiest languages to learn, but in my personal experience I think German is harder. That seems to confirm the DoD view. I am not German, but I can say German is not a sick language. You might not like it, but German is beautiful in its own way just as French is. Personally I found French rather easier to learn, but that doesn't prove anything.
The first invasion from WWII, and the invasion that started the war as well, was when facist Adolf Hilter and his Army of the group called the Nazis invaded Poland and captured it by surprise.
The German government replied by issuing orders such as, not to work for the french authority put up passive resistance
