The HAL 9000 .
HAL 9000 was the artificial intelligence on the space ship and responsible for killing the crew after going a bit schizophrenic. Famous for his quote "I'm sorry Dave I can't do that!". In the film the name was never explained but it has become to be an acronym of "Heuristically programmed ALgorithmic Computer ", tho' some people think it is a jibe at IBM, since if you use the next letter over in the alphabet from IBM you get HAL.
Hindustan Aeronautics LimitedFrom Arthur C. Clarke's 2001 a Space Odyssey, the on-board computer, the HAL 9000 is a Heuristically programmed ALgorithmic Computer. It is also the abbreviation for the Halliberton Company.
'Hal 9000' which stands for (Heuristic programmed ALgorithmic computer) who was voiced by Douglas Rain .
I have always heard that the name HAL was taken from stepping down one letter from the computer manufacturer IBM (I - H, B - A, M - L)The in-story justification is that it stands for Heuristic Algorithm, which is kind of clunky and awkward, but then we're talking about computer nerds here, the same people who came up with names like SNOBOL to stand for "string-oriented symbolic language" (huh?), so it's possible.
The ship was called the Jupiter 2, although in the original pilot it was called the Gemini 12. Perhaps the reason for the name change was that NASA was originally going to be involved with the series but when they saw what Irwin Allen was producing they pulled out. Perhaps in a fit of pique (with the availability of a pencil to edit the script) Allen gave it its well-known name.
The film 2001: A Space Odyssey, from the novel by Arthur C. Clarke, directed by Stanley Kubrick and starring Keir Dullea, was released in 1968. It featured groundbreaking special effects and influenced many future science fiction films, such as Star Wars. The HAL 9000 computer is one of the most interesting characters in the film, seemingly becoming the film's villain. However, in the sequel 2010, HAL's behaviour is vindicated by his first instructor, Dr. Chandra. There has been much discussion about HAL's name, and it was widely believed that HAL is one letter behind the initials of IBM, but this was denied by the film makers. In the original Arthur C. Clarke novel, it states that HAL stands for Heuristically programmed ALgorithmic computer.
