No he did not
Hernando de Soto was a Spanish conquistador who landed in present-day Florida in 1539, then tore around the southeastern and midwestern parts of North America until he died in 1542.
Hernando was in search of gold but he never found it. One day he discovered the Mississippi River. Soon after he became sick and died. Hernando's 600 men did not want the Indians to know their leader had died. [Because Hernando had forced the red men to give his men food and work for them.] So they threw Hernando's body into the river.
He worked for Spain. He explored and claimed lots of land in the American Southwest.
Gary Soto wrote "Looking for Work" in 1973.

Well he isn't really mean he did what we could for his own country just like anybody would have. Spain had no wealth and they needed to restore it! what is rude tho is that we are stuck doing this crappy work over these losers!
The exact number of people who like Gary Soto would be difficult to quantify as it depends on individual preferences. However, Soto is a well-known and respected author whose work has garnered a considerable following, particularly among readers of poetry and children's literature.
