Explorer 1 was designed and built by the Jet Propulsion Labratory of the California Institute of Technology. It weighed 30.8 pounds. Explorer 1 sopped transmitting data on May 23, 1958. It reentered the earth's atmosphere over the Pacific Ocean on March 31, 1970 after circling the earth more than 58,000 times.
