John Wilkes Booth was part of a Southern conspiracy to kidnap or kill Northern leaders, including Abraham Lincoln.
On April 14, 1865, Booth shot President Abraham Lincoln, at Ford's Theater in Washington DC and Lincoln died nine hours later, at 7:22am, on April 15, 1865. Booth was pursued, and was found and shot 11 days later.

Yes, they did punish John Wilkes Boothe. They found him when he was running from the theatre where he shot Abraham Lincoln. He was hiding out in a barn and the police set it on fire and shot at him and hit him somewhere in his midsection. I believe that shot killed him.
