This was the US Space Laboratory satellite named Skylab. However, it did not fall to earth in the 1980s, but on 11 July 1979. It disintegrated over Australia, dropping most of its pieces over a 160km wide strip of land in Western Australia, between the main Sdelaide-Perth highway and the Indian Pacific railway line.
