"In the United States, the power to declare war and appropriate military funds lies with the legislative branch of government, but the executive branch supplies the commander in chief of the military, capable of some military actions even without an official declaration of war." About 700 British Army regulars, under Lieutenant Colonel Francis Smith, were given secret orders to capture and destroy military supplies that were reportedly stored by the Massachusetts militia at Concord. Through effective intelligence gathering, Patriot colonials had received word weeks before the expedition that their supplies might be at risk, and had moved most of them to other locations. They also received details about British plans on the night before the battle, and were able to rapidly notify the area militias of the military movement. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Lexington_and_Concord
In 1749, Washington was appointed as surveyor for Culpepper County, Virginia after a trek for Lord Fairfax into the Blue Ridge Mountains. He was in the military from 1752-8 before being elected to the Virginia House of Burgesses in 1759. He spoke against Britain's policies and became a leader in the Association. From 1774-5 he attended both Continental Congresses. He led the Continental Army from 1775-1783 during the American Revolution. He then became the president of the Constitutional Convention in 1787.
France not only provided supplies to the Continental Army, but officers to help train colonial soldiers. The greatest assistance was the action of the French fleets to battle and harass the British fleet along the coast. This directly led to the surrender of Lord Cornwallis at Yorktown when his army was unable to either resupply or escape.
During the American Revolutionary War, the "redcoat" troops of Great Britain marched into Concord, Massachusetts, a small town some 20 miles northwest of Boston, in order to uncover and destroy military arms rumored to be hidden there. They were also given unwritten orders to identify and arrest various patriot leaders who were thought to be in hiding there.
Their "redcoats" made good targets for the colonial militia! Many of the redcoats were hired mercenaries that really didn't care who won. They did not know the area and their supplies mostly had to come from England but they were capable of stealing from the land owners or getting some supplies from friendly local people that supported them. They fought as the Europeans fought, not like the patriots who would shoot from behind bushes.
