It was the Southern states that 'formed separately' by breaking away as the Confederacy. The North was what was left. They didn't call themselves the North. They called themselves the Union.

Well they didnt like that the union was makes the federal government so powerful and liked they idea of states rights and when a anti states right president was elected they had enough and formed their own nation
By whom? The South called them The Confederate States of America - officially a separate nation, in their eyes. The North did not recognise the Confederacy, and simply called them The Rebel States.
