The US attacked Fortress Europe along with the other Allied armies on D Day to defeat the Nazi occupiers. This started on June 6, 1944.
It was called Operation Overlord
During WW II when the Third Reich had overrun all of continental Europe, they described Europe as a fortress, heavily fortified and resistant to invasion. Of course, Fortress Europe was invaded anyway, in 1945, and the Third Reich met its end.
