It depends which point system you mean. If you mean trust points, then that is simply people voting on other participants. That was on a per-person basis. The confidence point system is based on each answer and the number of people who vote on each answer. That actually is a fairer way of measuring confidence, since it is based on actual performance rather than a contributor's popularity.
If you mean contribution points, that refers to the amount of effort you put into all actions on the site. It is based on the actually work you do, not public perceptions, with a point per most activity. That is not foolproof since people do make mistakes and thus have to fix what they've done, artificially inflating the numbers.
'Historical' points are points earned before a major site update changed the way contributions were counted. The site describes them as "miscellaneous points from our older system".
Currently, the WikiAnswers system of trust points hasn't changed - you can only add trust points, and you can only recommend from a question the user has answered by going to the contributors tab and clicking "recommend".
No, there is currently no system for subtracting Trust Points. It's a purely positive, incremental system. This may be something we will introduce later.
No its just a place that can help you answer questions.
Your total WikiAnswers contribution points are calculated as the sum of all of the contribution points you have earned. These include first answers, edits, organizational actions, questions asked, and community contributions. All of these points come under the heading of "Contributions" in your WikiAnswers profile. Trust points are slightly different. Contributors do not directly earn these points through their contributions; they are awarded trust points by other WikiAnswers users. Therefore, trust points are not counted as contributions, and do not add to the contribution points total in a WikiAnswers profile.
Trust points do not entirely help you get hired to work for WikiAnswers, since actually getting paid to work for WikiAnswers is different from the amount of trust points you received online.
You get organization points for editing, answering and flagging
Many have.
Historical contribution points were introduced on Mon Feb 01, 2010, when the Split Contributions feature went live on WikiAnswers.
The Trust Point system allows contributors to vote for a WikiAnswers member whose contributions you think are worthwhile and legitimate, and clean. Please see the related links for more information on trust points.
There is no limit as to how many trust points a person can earn on WikiAnswers. Currently, the highest number of trust points held by a person on this site is well over 8,000.
