World War 1 ended in 1918 on November 11th with the Armistice. That Armistice was commemorated as the end of the worst conflict ever to occur in global history. The name was changed to Veterans Day to include those that served in World War 2 and other conflicts. At the time, WWI was the "war to end all wars." When the treaty was signed, it was the Great Armistice since there wouldn't be any more "great" wars. Since then there have of course been many wars and it's now called Veterans Day to honor all vets.
When it begain, it was first proclaimed Armistice Day by Woodrow Wilson in 1919. It became an official holiday in 1938. Some countries still refer to it as Armistice Day. The name was changed to Veterans Day and the scope expanded in 1954.
