Currently the largest city in the state of Delaware, this first Swedishsettlement in North America was named Wilmington by colony Proprietor Thomas Penn (son of William Penn) to honor his friend, Spencer Compton, Earl of Wilmington, who was the prime minister during the reign of George II of Great Britain. However, the Lenape People lived there first, and they called it either Paxahakink or Pakehakink, meaning "place where the ground splits", presumably from drying out.
The earliest settlement there was Fort Christina.
