Protestant churches had barely begun during the Middle Ages. The most powerful Church was the orthodox Christian Church. At the Great Schism, it separated into the Roman Catholic Church, which was arguably the larger, and the Eastern Orthodox Church. From a time before the fall of the Roman Empire, there were always also other, smaller church organizations, such as the Coptic Orthodox and Oriental Orthodox Churches.
They were excommunicated. This is still a term used today.

The medieval church used its religious power to manipulate people into thinking that if they did not do what the church mandated, they would go to hell. The church took advantage of the superstitious people and medieval kings and used its religious power to take over the world. Power in the middle ages was used and abused the same as it is today - the rich and powerful do as they want, and the lesser people get trampled on.
i am orthodox and personally i have never heard of this papal infallibility been used in the church or dogmata.
During the Early Middle Ages, the Colosseum was used as the site of a church and cemetery. Later on, the spaces in the structure were rented out as shops and living quarters. It was also clearly used for other purposes, though the records are not complete about this, and parts of it were removed to be used elsewhere.
Castles in the Middle Ages were used to keep out enemies.
