After the battle the Hitties withdrew to the City of Kadesh and Rameses, unable to sustain a prolonged siege, withdrew from the field. The conflict dragged on until 1258BC when a peace treaty was signed, the first known in history.
There is no definite consensus as to the outcome of the battle. Some sources claim it was an Egyptian victory. Others say it was a tie. Still others think that the Hittites won.
