1. Independence for the Philippines was delayed until 1946, although Filipinos celebrate their original Independence Day as occurring in 1898, before Americans stepped in and ignored the Filipino constitution and Filipino President.

2. The United States acquired the Philippines as an overseas colony which served as a base for U.S. business and military interests in the Asia/Pacific region.

3. Following the conclusion of major hostilities after Americans granted Cuba independence but did not give the same to the Philippines after the Spaniards were defeated in both countries after the Spanish-American War, the U.S. did it's best to "Americanize" the Philippines. This occured after "water torture" of the Filipino revolutionaries, a process which Americans invented in the Philippines, and after massacring thousands of Filipinos with machine guns. The Colt 45 was also invented to kill the Filipino, as they would withstand the other firearms Americans used, due to the palm base shields the Filipinos wore.

4. Through successful civilian administration, the Islands were modernized and the nation prepared for eventual independence. According the U.S. - the Philippines became an independent nation on July 4, 1946, yet according to Philippine documents, the original independence really occurred in 1898 because they had their own constitution and President then, which Americans did not acknowledge. American troops remained in the Philippines 50 years after declaring the Philippines independent, and have a contract to remain in the Philippines for a longer period if needed.

5. Being ruled over for 400 years by Spaniards and another 100 years by Americans has contributed to past survival techniques exercised by Filipinos--such as turning a blind-eye to atrocities unless permission is granted, having fiestas, dances, and laughing to ease hardships, telling tall tales, delving into religion, exercising tolerance, feigning affection, or being proud whenever their own countrymen achieve greatness in the world. These characteristics have helped Filipinos to cope after lack of empowering support from other ruling countries.
