If you mean the fourth voyage of Christopher Columbus to the Western Hemisphere, he learned two things the Europeans did not know up to the point: (1) There was another ocean on the other side of Panama; and (2) there was gold in the Americas.
Columbus did not find what he was looking for (a waterway to Asia), and he lost ships and men because of storms, battles with the locals, and a mutiny by some of his crew.

On his first voyage he had three, On his second he took along a total of seventeen. On his third voyage he had six ships. On his final voyage he had four old, worn out ships.
He didn't find a passage to get to the West Indies. It would have been a shorter voyage for traders.
