The Earth is overpopulated and the crew of the Jupiter 2 are to go to the third planet in the Alpha Centauri star system to set up a colony for other Earth people. The crew is Professor John Robinson, his wife Maureen, their children (Judy, Penny and Will) and Major Don West. Doctor Zachary Smith, working for an unnamed enemy government, sabotages the mission. He reprograms the ship's robot to destroy the ship after takeoff (the crew is in suspended animation), but is trapped on the ship at takeoff. His excess weight throws the ship off course and they become hopelessly lost. Each episode shows them in a struggle of one kind or another as they try to find their way back.
