It was the eruption of Mount Vesuvius that buried Pompeii in 79.
There were four towns that we know for certain that were affected by Vesuvius. They were Pompeii, Herculaneum, Oplontis and Stabiae. There was also another town nearby called Nuceria, which may have been affected.
Pompeii was destroyed by a volcanic eruption from Mount Vesuvius, which is a stratovolcano near the Bay of Naples. Prior to the eruption that destroyed Pompeii and Herculaneum in 79AD, two earthquakes preceded in 62AD and 64AD which caused widespread destruction. The eruption of Vesuvius per se was in two phases; first there was a Plinian eruption that produced a large amount of pumice that settled over Pompeii and Herculaneum and then a pyroclastic flows followed.

Herculaneum was the neibouring city - port of Pompeii.
Herculaneum.
Herculaneum was a sister city of Pompeii. However it was not your average everyday Roman town as Pompeii was. Herculaneum was a upper class resort town (as were most of the places in the area). The wealthy had houses and villas there where they would go to escape the stifling heat of Rome in the summer months.
