There is some evidence that even in ancient times (as far back as the 3rd century BCE), certain kings tried to take a census; this is mentioned in the Rig Veda. But there was no reliable or easy way to survey the population of an entire kingdom until fairly recently. Most historians believe the first efforts at a census in India were taken by the British, when India was a colony. Some sources say these first efforts occurred in the mid-1860s, while others say they began around 1872; in both cases, only portions of the country were counted. The first thorough population survey of the entire country of India occurred in 1881, and the census has been taken every ten years ever since.
