Pakistan previously comprised West Pakistan and East Pakistan, which since 1971 has been the separate country of Bangladesh.

In the 1967 edition of Whitaker's almanac the population of West Pakistan was given as 43 million, and that of East Pakistan as 51 million.

the combined population of the provinces making up West Pakistan was:

34 million in 1951, a few years after partition;

43 million in 1961, which corresponds with the figure given above;

66 million in 1972;

87 million in 1981;

132 million in 1998.

The 2010 population of that territory is estimated to be about 170 million.

The population now is about 156 million, but from a chart it appears to have been about 42 million at the time of partition, and about 58 million in 1961.
