On July 17, 1944, two explosions at Port Chicago Naval Ammunitions depot destroyed two ships, wiped out the pier and killed 302 men, most of them Negroes who were not trained to handle the explosives and were told they would not detonate. After the explosions 50 men were charged with mutiny after refusing to load ammunition, stating that they were afraid. The men were found guilty. This is a very brief summary of what has been called the greatest wartime disaster on American soil.
