Muslims were never split in their religious faith or Islam principles. They are just referred to different schools or different historical views.
This claimed split was not in religion or because religious differences. The claimed split was historically on the approach to be adopted on the selection of who succeeds prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in ruling the Islamic State. Some Muslims (called after that Sunnis) preferred to elect Abou Bakr as the first successor in ruling the country (called Caliph). Some others (called after that Shiites) claimed that the ruler after prophet Muhammad death should be from Muhammad's family and according to this approach should be Aly Ibn Aboutaleb, Prophet Muhammad cousin and husband of his daughter Fatima. However, when Abou Bakr was agreed upon by the majority, all people (Sunnis and Shiites) accepted him as the first Caliph, including Aly (God be pleased with him) himself. The same was repeated again when Omar was elected as the second Caliph after Abou Bakr death and again after Othman election as the third Caliph. Then Aly was elected as the fourth Caliph.
Refer to question below for more information.
After the death of Muhammad an internal conflict developed because there was a disagreement among followers. They could not decide whether the leader should be elected by people or someone developed by Muhammad.
A translation of the Adan or Call to Prayer is:
God is Great.
God is Great.
God is Great.
God is Great.
I testify that there is none worthy of worship except God.
I testify that there is none worthy of worship except God.
I testify that Muhammad is the messenger of God.
I testify that Muhammad is the messenger of God.
Come to prayer!
Come to prayer!
Come to success!
Come to success!
God is Great!
God is Great!
There is none worthy of worship except God
After Mohammed's death, his followers could not decide if the Caliph (leader) should be someone directly descended from Mohammed or elected by followers. This caused the Suni(election) and Shi'a(descendants) denominations within Islam.
It was an argument over who was supposed to be Muhammad's successor. Modern day Shi'ites believe Ali should have been Muhammad's first successor, and modern day Sunnis believe Abu Bakr should have been his first successor. The Muslims actually went to war with each other over this right after Muhammad died, with Muhammad's widow Aisha leading one army and Ali leading the other.
It is just a split on who succeeds the Prophet on leading Muslims. in a meeting of some top political leaders they elected Abou Bakr (God pleased with Him) as leader. but Shia Muslims believed successor of prophet can only be selected by God and in Ghadir event prophet has announced Ali (God pleased with Him, the prophet Cousin and son in law) as leader after prophet. However, when the majority agreed upon Abou Bakr they submitted to the majority choice. Accordingly, it is not split but just different schools. Refer to question below.
There was no division after the death of the holy Prophet (SAW). The division ocurred when the traitors rose in revolt against the third Rightful Caliph Hazrat Usma (RA) and killed him.
the division rose straightly after the death of Prophet (SAW). and that is because people neglected the advises of Prophet for his successor. they refused his orders in this regard and pointed out Abubakr wile the holy Prophet was still unburied. they neglect his advises for Ali (AS). it is not acceptable to say that Prophet didnt care about the future of his religion and his followers did. few people start to follow Ali but majority followed Abu bakr. this is the firs division in Islam. after that people lost their way and they went astray.
It is shear blame on the honorable personality of The holy Prophet (SAW) and Hazrat Ali (RA). Hazrat Ali (RA) was not a coward to surrender his right (if he had been given the right by The Holy Prophet (SAW). Hazrat Ali not only accepted Hazrat Abu Bakr as Caliph but also acted as most respectable adviser to The First Rightfu Caliph. No body followed Hazrat Ali (RA) during the Caliphate of first three Rightful Caliphs.
Hazrat Ali (RA) again not only accepted Hazrat Omar (RA) the Caliph but also was one of the most trusted advisers of Hazrat Omar (RA) during his caliphate.
Had he been against Hazrat Omar (RA) why would Hazrat Omar had included him among the Six member team of the Companions of the Holy prophet (SAW) who were assigned the task of electing a Caliph from among themselves?
The Holy Prophet (SAW) during his last illness appointed Hazrat Abu Bakr (RA) the Imam in his own place. Hazrat Ali (RA) never objected to it. He offered prayers behind the first three rightful Caliphs.
Personally I avoid controversy and never try to answer any question about Shiia religion that was concocted much later, even after the death of Hazrat Ali (RA), and is based upon hatred for the Companions of the holy Prophet (SAW). If the Companions ignored the advice of the Holy Prophet (SAW), Where stands Islam then? It is rejecting even the Prophet-hood of the beloved Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (SAW). All his efforts become futile if we believe that the holy Companions (RA) reverted from Islam as the Shiia religion claims. Allah Almighty has Expressed His good will and pleasure for the holy Companions (RA) in the holy Qur'an in many verses. Perhaps that is why in Shiia religion the present Qur'an is not considered authentic whereas Allah Almighty Himself claims that He has revealed this Qur'an and He Himself is responsible for its authenticity. Where does stand Allah Almighty Who could not Guarantee the authenticity of His Qur'an? Is He so powerless? (Allah forbid) No, He is omnipotent, All Powerful, Ruler of the worlds without any partner.
Hazrat Ali (RA) is called the Lion of Allah Almighty. He fought against non-believers under the banner of the holy Prophet (SAW) in the company of all holy Companions (RA) and did miraculous deeds. How can we admit that he was such a coward as he yielded to the three Rightful Caliphs while his son Hazrat Hussain (RA) exhibited exemplary bravery against the forces of Yazeed and showed to the world how to face the evil forces though the defeat was inevitable?
What about Hazrat Hassan (RA) who made peace with Hazrat Amir Muawia (RA) and had been receiving millions of Deenars from him as stipend? Didn't he surrender his claim to Caliphate before Hazrat Amir Muawia (RA)? Had Hazrat Hussain (RA) not been receiving stipends from Hazrat Omar (RA) and Hazrat Amir Muawia?
Hundred and one reasons could be put forward to prove that Islam is the only religion revealed to the Holy Prophet (SAW). The Iranian President MR. Nazadi has rightly said that Hazrat Muhammad (SAW) was neither a Sunni nor a Shiia.
It is better if we don't wash our dirty linen on this forum. The Muslim Ummah is already facing a lot of controversies and problems. Let us avoid such things as might create hatred. It is not a suitable forum to preach Sunni-ism or Shiia-ism.
