Federal republic refers to a type of government which has a central government sharing power with several state governments.
Republic.
A republic is a country which is not rules by a king (monarchy) prince (principality) or duke (duchy). It can be a democracy, an authoritarian state, a totalitarian state or a dictatorship.
State administration was often weak.
A Federal Republic is a federation of states with a republican form of government, so basically, the state and national governments share powers.
The 1997 Census of Government says it best... "There were 87,504 governmental units in the United States as of June 1997. In addition to the Federal Government and the 50 state governments, there were 87,453 units of local government. Of these, 39,044 are general purpose local governments - 3,043 county governments and 36,001 subcounty general purpose governments, including 13,726 school distict governments and 34,683 special district governments."
Depending on how strictly you define "Federal Republic"--yes. Strictly speaking, the United States is a constitutional republic (not a democracy as is often said). Generally speaking, a federal republic is a system in which the central government is above state/local governments, but state/local governments maintain a degree of power in their own domains. In this way, the U.S. government closely approximates a federal republic.
