They were created to assist the German Armed Forces (Wehrmacht) in the elimination of Jewish citizens in Europe.
generally liquidation.
The German Einsatzgruppen (task groups) were execution squads that went in to places after the wehrmacht. The squads were composed of kriminal polizei, Gestapo, Waffen SS and SD men. These Einsatzgruppen were responsible for killing over one million jews.
After the war some members of the Einsatzgruppen were put on trial and convicted. A few did deals with the prosecutors and agreed to give evidence for the prosecution in exchange for immunity. Some escaped to the Americas, but most went home and lived happily ever after.
It sounds as if you are thinking of the Sonderkommandosor 'special squads' that were forced to move corpses from the gas chambers to to the crematoria.
a kommando is just a squad. on the easter front 'Sonderkommando' (special squads) were sent out to kill Jews. work groups from concentration camps were call kommandos, they were named after their leader, so if the leader was called Patel, then the squad would be called the Patelkommando. in many of the death camp the 'stokers' (to give them their offical title) were called Sonderkommado (special squads) - known now as Jewish Sonderkommando as not to be confused with the pre-existing Sonderkommando.
There were two types of Sonderkommando; the German Sonderkommando and the Jewish Sonderkommando. Essentially the word just means 'special squad', ie. a squad created for special duties. The most famous is of course the Jewish Sonderkommando, as they were the squads employed in the extermination process.

Einsatzgruppen were, in layman's terms, the death squads of the Waffen SS.
Einsatzgruppen (Special-operation units) were SS paramilitary death squads that took part in the systematic killing of mostly civilians, including: Jews, communists, intellectuals, and others.
They were the SD-Einsatzgruppen.
"Einsatzgruppen were directly responsible for many murders during WW2 ". The generic meaning of "einsatzgrupp" is 'Task Force' but under the Nazi regime that gained an entirely more sinister connotation.
These groups are called "Einsatzgruppen" and would round up Jews and shoot them to death. The project was replaced with the death camps in order to preserve the bullets.
Einsatzgruppe (Special Operations Unit)
The SS, or Schutzstaffel ("Protective Squadron"), group were originally Hitler's personal bodyguards. Toward the war's end they became the Einsatzgruppen, or death squads, mercilessly and brutally hunting down mainly Jews.

The Jewish, if not killed by the Einsatzgruppen in mass shootings, they would be put into ghettos. From there on the Jewish men, women and children would later be placed on fret trains going from anywhere to Bergen-Belsen to Auschwitz.

Officially, the purpose of the Einsatzgruppen was to kill guerrilla fighters in the Soviet Union, but in practice their main function was to kill Soviet Jews. The ''Einsatzgruppen'' were a specialized German force. They were mobile killing units (death squads) and went into action behind German lines on the Eastern Front, killing mainly Jews. There were four Einsatzgruppen: A, B, C and D. They were all posted in different areas behind the Eastern Front.Incredible as it may sound, three of these four groups were commanded by men with doctorates! The commander of Group C, Otto Rasch, even had two doctorates and was referred to as Dr. Dr. Rasch. The Einsatzgruppen were SS paramilitary forces in WW2 that were primarily employed to eliminate Jews and Communist party officials. They were little more than death squads who killed without qualm or remorse.'The Einsatzgruppen were the mobile Nazi killing squads trained by the SS. They were dispatched on special assignments for the primary purpose of murdering Jews. Their task to kill the Jews on the spot - Jews, but not only Jews; communists, Gypsies, political leaders, and the intelligentsia were also killed. Order police battalions, Waffen SS units, the Higher SS, and Police Leaders also carried out the mass executions. Einsatzgruppen units followed the German Army (Wehrmacht) into the Soviet Union following the June, 1941 invasion of Soviet Territory. (1) Berenbaum, Michael, editor. Witness to the Holocaust.
