The book of Revelation was written by St. John the Evangelist while he was in exile on the island of Patmos. It was written as a letter to the various churches spread throughout the known world. The writing has a very distinct anti-Roman lean, so John had to disguise that somehow so that when the letter was made public, he wouldn't be executed.
